Life in lockdown

A summary of what we’ve been up to during lockdown, and how you can join us for a festive sing.

Back in March 2020, we were half way through the Spring term and our Senior Chorus were busy rehearsing for a perfomance at De Montfort Hall alongside the Leicester Philharmonic Choir at the end of the month.

Of course we all know what happened next!

After a couple of months of lockdown it soon became clear the situtation wasn’t going to change anytime soon so, like so many we entered the new world of Zoom! We kicked off in the summer with a few social gatherings and fun quizzes, led by our MD Will Welsford and since the new school year in September we’ve had weekly rehearsal sessions on Zoom and learnt a number of new songs.

Despite the challenges of variable wi-fi signal and very different experience of singing to a laptop in the living room/kitchen/garden our singers have been joining in with enthusiasm and sounding great.

Every session starts with a quick catch-up, with exciting news of home haircuts, adventurous walks and baking experiments before getting down to the business of singing. We’ve even had the odd guest from the animal kingdom to keep things interesting!

With December finally here – surely every choirs’ favourite time of the year – we’ve started on the Christmas songs. And we’ve decided now is a good time to say why not join us, because who doesn’t love a Christmas song?! Our seniors have been enjoying Bach’s Christmas music, including an In Dulce Jubilo setting. This is part of the Gabrieli Consort and Players’ Bach to School initiative. They will also be singing an LYC favourite, the Carol of Adoration by Edgar Pettman, in next week’s rehearsal. The Juniors are livening up things by singing a traditional Christmas round Christmas Bells, and John Rutter’s magical arrangement of Sans Day Carol.

Whilst we’re running as an online choir all our sessions and free to join, so if you think your child might like to come along to a session and sing some festive tunes then they would be more than welcome.
